Gallery Information

The Plastic Club was founded in 1897 by a group of professional women artists at a time when already existing art clubs in the city were only open to men. The founders of the Plastic Club wanted a place for artists to meet, exchange ideas, and exhibit their work. The club served this purpose for almost 100 years. Then in the 1990s when many of the barriers between the traditional activities of men and women were being broken, like many other clubs and organizations, the Plastic Club opened up to everyone. Since then men have played an equal role in all the activities of the club; running workshops, exhibiting, serving on the board, and holding office.

Dave DiMarchi is a queer, multi-disciplinary artist and curator working predominantly in works on paper including printmaking, drawing and painting. His practice focuses on relentless material study, often seeking unconventional ways of employing traditional media. As an artist, he has exhibited works on paper, installations, and books in the US and internationally; as a curator, he aims to deepen the relationship between a lay public and the world of works on paper, often seeking out artists and collectives whose connective tissue, narratives and technical precision are exemplary in their field. Additionally, he teaches printmaking, papermaking and book forms throughout the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania area, he maintains a collaborative studio and art space, the Judith K. Brodsky Printmaking Studio, at the Arts Council of Princeton. In autumn of 2022, he was selected as the Arts Council of Princeton’s Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence, through which he developed a practice of collage-based multimedia and print works, a practice that has grown into a study of ceramic multiples and sculpture. He has been selected to curate and serve as juror for both national and international exhibitions of printed media and works on paper, and has recently served as a Visiting Artist, Guest Lecturer, Instructor, and Curator/Juror at Flat Tail Press and the Northwest Arts Center (Minot, ND), the St. Louis Artists Guild (St. Louis, MO) and the Arts Council of Princeton (Princeton, NJ). He serves as the Arts Council’s Studios Manager and Master Printer, and lead Printmaking Instructor, in addition to leading the Printmaking Curriculum at Mercer County College. For nearly 16 years, he has created his own work, curated exhibitions, provided print exchange opportunities, and published fine art prints as 9INHANDPRESS, a fine art printmaking and education studio. You can find more of Dave's work at www.9inhandpress.com, or on Instagram @9inhandpress.
