Valerie Dillon
ARTIST STATEMENT
Handicraft materials that evoke feelings of relaxation, safety, comfort, and play are taken apart and reconfigured into something bold and abstract. The overlooked domestic items used as the foundation of the work, symbolize the invisible support system created by female caretakers.
Shape and color are layered using experimentation and intuition to create depth and dimension. The bright grid-based structures portray a safety net of hope in a time of uncertainty. The calmness found in feeling comfortable to play and trust the process is captured in the finished pieces.
An attraction to the design elements found in astronomical charts, aerial maps, crochet patterns,
embroidery diagrams, puzzles, and board games can be found throughout the compositions. These sources metaphorically represent the physical, rational, emotional, and spiritual navigation devices used to take steps into the unknown.
Stylistically and conceptually, the work is inspired by the metaphysical art of Hilma af Klint, Irene Rice Pereira and the Arte Povera artist Marisa Merz. Artists who focus on material and process, Anni Albers, Sheila Hicks and Ruth Asawa are also a great influence, as well as the use of geometric abstraction from Sophie Taeuber Arp, Sonia Delaunay and Neo-Concrete artist Lygia Pape.
