Artist Statement
"Growing things and growing roots" is the new focus in my life and art.
With my husband's retirement in 2001 from military duty, I have at last
settled in one place...in Portsmouth, Rhode Island overlooking the
Sakonnet River. I noticed while preparing for a solo exhibit at the Providence
Art Club that there was a wonderful unused etching press in the corner
of the painting studio. I lobbied to get a print class reestablished and
ended up teaching it. Because of poor studio ventilation and limited
equipment at the club, I am constantly experimenting with non-solvent
techniques and new materials. This lily series began as a class
demonstration showing drypoint on plastic with painted chine colle.'
This was a major shift from my usual tonal approach and aquatint
technique to one of line, color and surface patina. The subject idea
came from my son's birthday gift that year of dozens of glorious
lilies...what better way to share the memory than through my art?
Carol's aquatint technique was featured in the October 1999 issue of
The Artist's Magazine. Collections containing her prints include: the
Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the United States
Library of Congress, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the
Newport Art Museum, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at
Rutgers University. She is listed in Biographical Encyclopedia of American
Painters, Sculptors & Engravers of the U.S., Colonial to 2002; The Best
of Printmaking, An International Collection; and Who's Who in American
Art.
