Artist Statement
I've been at making woodcut prints that span some 5o years. I needed
to take a long leave of this pursuit in the late 60s to support my
family, but since retiring in 2000 from my job as a graphic designer, I've
renewed printmaking. I've always had a keen interest in American art,
and in defining that durable quality that we all can connect with. From
something that is very "everyday" to something more fleeting, I hope to
make visual images that offer an iconic connection and to push the
limits of wood grain.
The very nature of wood, with its grain and a certain resistance to a
sharp cutting tool has a lot of influence on how an image is made. Wood
imposes its limitations and you must adapt and use those limitations to
realize your vision. Prints also has an appeal for broad distribution
and availability to many people of modest means. Fine art prints is a
way for people to have an original piece of work.
"Eat-Rite at Nite"
The Eat-Rite diner is located down the street from Busch Stadium in St.
Louis. It is open 24 hours a day, every day, for the tired and hungry
or anyone who could use a hot cup of coffee and some conversation. The
counter at Eat-Rite barely holds eight people, who huddle over the
grill and coffee pots. This area of St. Louis, only a short walk to the
Mississippi, can get very dark, damp and cold during the winter months.
The "Eat-Rite" sign is a beacon in the night when everything else is
closed. It glows in the dark, offering warmth and camaraderie. (This is not
a "Mickey Ds!")
