Artist Statement
Although Hiratsukaís artwork is mainly considered representational, he deals with more metaphorical aspects rather than realistic physical evidence. The human body along with other elements; fruit, vegetables, furniture, animals, etc. have been his most recent focus. His images bear a slight resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, but also express contemporary aspects of the Western Hemisphere.
Bio
Hiratsuka was born in Osaka, Japan and moved to the United States in 1985. Since 1992 he has been teaching printmaking at Oregon State University. His graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia and has received numerous awards in national and international competitions. Hiratsukaís work is in many public collections, including The British Museum, Tokyo Central Museum, New York Public Library, Portland Art Museum and Hallmark Cards, Inc.
