Artist Statement
The first print I ever created was an experiment of placing black ink on lines that I glued onto cardboard and ran through a proofing press. I created this image in the production department of a magazine for which I was a graphic designer in 1957. Later using a technique that had been used by Degas, I painted color images on glass and pulled monotypes. Linoleum cuts then caught my interest and I hand-pulled small editions on rice paper. In 1977 I studied etching at Pratt Graphics Center in New York, but to my dismay, discovered that etching was not for me. I returned to creating large-scale paintings and small-scale sculpture.
In the last few years I have been making prints again, now using a computer. My new work allows me to create multiples for the first time and this is a joy.
After creating an image I bring a disk to Silicon Gallery in Philadelphia.
With Epson pigments and acid-free paper my image becomes as archival as the monotypes.
I am developing a new vocabulary, based on experimenting with the possibilities of the computer.
I face the computer just as I faced the empty plate. I have just begun to explore!
