Artist Statement
For the last three years both my paintings and prints have derived from photos taken on trips, not typical postcard photos but snatches of walls, pavements, etc.
The inspiration for this print is construction netting on the side of a building in Samara on the Don River, Russia. It is part of a large series titled Postcards from Russia.
This image is a two-plate multicolored print on Rives BFK over mulberry chine colle. the most difficult print I've ever inked. The size is 20" x 15".
These two plates have been printed in two versions, one much simpler than the above. I am two thirds done with the series, all employing sugar lift, aquatint, and some dry point enhancement.
My work usually starts with the painting and proceeds to the print. My focus is on texture and in the last few years, color. Painting is easier for me because I'm in total control,
but with printmaking I'm not sure whether I or the process is leading.
